Move-Out Cleaning Checklist for Maryland Renters

Before you start
Read your lease. Maryland landlords can deduct for anything beyond “ordinary wear and tear,” but the definition varies by lease. If your lease specifies “professional cleaning,” a receipt matters — keep it.
Schedule your clean after the truck leaves and before your walk-through. An empty home cleans faster and better.
Kitchen (where deposits live or die)
- Inside and outside of the oven — including the window and racks
- Inside and outside of the refrigerator
- Inside all cabinets and drawers (wipe out crumbs, liners)
- Range hood filter — de-grease
- Under the burners and stovetop
- Microwave inside and out
- Dishwasher interior and seal
- Sink, faucet, and garbage disposal
- Backsplash and tile grout
Bathrooms
- Tub and shower — scrub to remove any soap scum, mildew, caulk lines
- Toilet inside and out — check the base, behind, bolt covers
- Vanity cabinets and medicine cabinets inside and out
- Mirror, light fixtures, and exhaust fan cover
- Wash the floor and clean the grout lines
- Don’t forget behind the door and toilet paper holder
Every room
- Baseboards — hand-wiped, not dusted
- Door frames, door tops, and the edges of the doors
- Light switches, outlet covers, and dry dust the thermostat
- Inside closets — floors and shelves
- Ceiling fans, light fixtures, and vents
- Windows interior, sills, and tracks
- Blinds — slat-by-slat (or replace if damaged)
- Walls — spot-clean marks and scuffs; be careful not to scrub too hard as you can remove paint (especially flat paint)
- Floors: vacuum, wash, or shampoo if pets had accidents in the home
