House Cleaning Tips for Allergy Sufferers

If someone in your household has allergies, dust removal isn’t the same game as tidiness. Dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and mold spores are the real targets — and they live in places most cleaning misses.

Start with the air, not the surfaces

Most allergen cleaning happens on the wrong surfaces. The things you see (counters, floors) matter less than the things you don’t (HVAC filters, ceiling fan blades, blinds, soft furniture). Start here:

  • HVAC filter: replace every 30–60 days during pollen season (March–June, September). Use MERV 11 or better.
  • Ceiling fans: blades hold a cone of settled allergen dust that gets re-distributed every time they’re turned on. Wipe monthly with damp microfiber.
  • Blinds: slat-by-slat, not feather-dusted. The feather just moves it around.
  • Vent covers: pull them down and wash them when you change the air filters.

Vacuum with HEPA or don’t bother

Standard vacuums exhaust fine particles straight back into the air. A HEPA-filtered vacuum captures particles down to 0.3 microns — the size that carries dust mite feces and cat dander. All of our recurring cleans use HEPA vacuums.

The bedroom matters most

Allergy sufferers spend 7–9 hours a night in the bedroom. Treat your bedroom as the highest priority:

  • Wash sheets weekly in hot water (>130°F kills dust mites)
  • Use allergen-proof mattress and pillow covers — wash the pillow cover when washing sheets
  • Vacuum the mattress itself quarterly
  • Keep pets out of the bedroom if possible
  • Minimize soft furniture — fewer upholstered reading chairs, fewer decorative pillows

Pollen season (March through June in Maryland)

Maryland’s tree pollen season is famously long. During peak weeks:

  • Keep windows closed (tempting as spring breezes are)
  • Wipe sills and tracks weekly — pollen settles there first
  • Leave shoes at the door
  • Shower at night to keep pollen off bedding
  • Wipe pet paws when they come in from the yard

Switch to green cleaning products

Chemical fragrance is a common allergy and asthma trigger all on its own. Our certified non-toxic green products are fragrance-free and tested for irritant potential. Our PUREmist® disinfection uses only electrolyzed water — no chemicals, no VOCs, no residue.
