Green Cleaning vs. Traditional Cleaning: What Actually Changes in Your Home

“Green” has meant a lot of things in a lot of industries — not all of them meaningful. In cleaning, the difference is real and testable. Here’s what actually changes when you switch from traditional to green cleaning.

The headline difference

Traditional cleaning uses broad-spectrum chemicals — ammonia, chlorine bleach, quaternary ammonium compounds, and synthetic fragrance — to cut grease, disinfect, and deodorize. They work. They also leave residue on surfaces your kids touch, in the air your pets breathe, and on fabrics that absorb them.

Green cleaning uses products certified non-toxic by an independent body, plus cleaning methods (microfiber, HEPA vacuuming, electrolyzed water) that lift and remove contaminants rather than coating them with a chemical.

What “certified green” actually means

The term “green” is unregulated on a label. “Certified green” is different. Maid Brigade cleans to a certified green standard — independently tested products and methods, developed specifically for house cleaning. It covers:

  • Toxicity testing on every ingredient, not just finished product
  • Verified safer chemistry (no VOCs, phthalates, formaldehyde, chlorine bleach, or ammonia)
  • Process audits — how the products are used, not just what’s in them
  • HEPA vacuums with 4 separate filters — this improves your indoor air quality with measurable proof, meaning healthier air for you
  • Our microfiber cloths and our color-coded systems prevent cross-contamination

PUREmist® Disinfection

The one thing green cleaning used to struggle with was disinfection. Bleach kills germs; so does quat. Neither is safe around kids, pets, or asthma sufferers.

Our answer is PUREmist® — our disinfection service built on an electrolyzed-water system that uses only salt, water, and electricity to produce hypochlorous acid (HOCl). HOCl is EPA-registered, hospital-grade, and 80× more effective than bleach at killing pathogens — without residue, without fumes, without gloves.

The same technology is used in hospitals, NICU rooms, and food-production facilities. It’s the active ingredient in your own white blood cells.

Who benefits most

Every household benefits, but the difference is sharpest for:

  • Homes with children, especially those under 5
  • Homes with asthma, eczema, or allergy sufferers
  • Homes with pets (who lick floors and absorb chemicals through paws)
  • Chemotherapy and immunocompromised households
  • Anyone sensitive to fragrance

What doesn’t change

One common worry: will green products actually clean? Yes. The ingredients work. Fingerprints lift. Grease comes off. Soap scum dissolves. You shouldn’t be able to tell the difference in what’s left on your counters — only in what’s no longer in the air.
