Spring Cleaning Guide for Frederick County, MD

Spring arrives later in Frederick County than it does in DC — and when it comes, it comes with pollen, mud, and the kind of yard debris that ends up in the house. Here’s the order of operations our teams use from late February through June.

Late February: prep the HVAC

Before pollen hits in March, change the filter (MERV 11 or higher) and have the system serviced if it hasn’t been in two years. A dirty system re-distributes dust every cycle.

Early March: the top-down dust sweep

Work from ceiling to floor. Don’t skip:

  • Ceiling fan blades — the cone of dust on top will redistribute the moment you turn them on for the first warm day
  • Door and window tops
  • Upper cabinet tops
  • Wall-mounted picture frame tops
  • Light fixtures and recessed-can rims

Mid-March: windows, sills, and tracks

This one matters more in Frederick County than it does in the District, because many older county homes (Downtown Frederick, Middletown, Brunswick, New Market) have original wood sash windows. Pollen builds up in the tracks and the weatherstripping. Pull them, vacuum out the sills, wipe the tracks with a damp microfiber.

Late March: mud season

Frederick County gets genuinely muddy at the transition out of winter. Put down heavy-duty mats at every entry, and schedule a mid-spring deep clean after the mud dries. Don’t forget:

  • Entry rugs laundered or shampooed
  • Garage floor swept and hosed
  • Mudroom floors, walls, and coat hooks
  • Pet paws — wipe-downs on the way in

April: bathroom grout reset

Winter steam + closed windows = more bathroom mildew than most homeowners realize. April is the best time for a grout-and-caulk reset before warm-weather humidity.

May: kitchen deep dive

Before summer heats your kitchen and grease becomes sticky, do the deep clean:

  • Inside the oven
  • Range hood filter
  • Fridge coils (vacuum behind)
  • Fridge gasket (baking soda paste works)
  • Inside cabinets
  • Backsplash grout

June: post-pollen catch-up

By mid-June, Maryland’s tree pollen has dropped. One more wipe-down of sills, tracks, blinds, and fan blades clears the residue before summer dust takes over. This is a popular time for our recurring clients to add an off-cycle deep clean.
